Summer’s first fig harvest. My parents planted these trees back when we were kids growing up on Vancouver Island, BC, in the 1980s. Now these trees are huge, and produce tons of figs every summer. Enjoyed by us, friends … and the squirrels and birds in recent years. Happy Sunday everyone.

I remember the first time I made gemista (stuffed veggies): it was in the village with my aunts, I prepared everything on a table outside in the shade of a mespila (loquat) tree and cooked them in a rickety old oven powered by propane. I made stuffed onions and tomatoes, they were vegetarian, and they were yummy. I still make them the same way. I always dot the tops with butter, and sprinkle sugar in the base of the tomato. I went to the farm yesterday and they were selling boxes of tomatoes with the words “tomato sauce” on the side, but for me they might as well have said “gemista tomatoes”!
