#7 On Sunday @cyprusmail_official published an article by @alexia.saleem who wrote a beautiful article (thank you) about my story behind the cookbook - my cancer journey, quitting law, and much more. Thank you to those who have reached out to me about it. I hope to share the online link this Friday. Anyway, the article ties in nicely to this shot, as both remind me of my journey into photography. I preface this by saying I know this is not the most amazing shot, but I love it because of it communicates a story about my aunt to me: her worn down nail, a reflection of how hard working she is; her cradle, a reflection of how much she loves her animals: her unassuming pose. It’s the point about communication that is key for me here. Just before I started my food blog in 2012, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The details and background to which I have talked about in the book, but I’ll jump to the part where when I lost my voice for two months and was told it might not come back. At this stage I decided I wanted to find a new way to communicate. This book is very much a passion project in the sense that I wanted to preserve my family’s recipes, and traditional Cypriot recipes in general too, but it’s also the silver lining of my thyroid cancer journey. As soon as I could after my treatment , I started taking photography classes. I then used that knowledge to start taking pictures of my food. Later, I also was lucky to attend a couple courses with @andreagentl and @martinhyers who really had a huge influence over me and whom I am grateful to for hosting such fabulous photography workshops, both with @cannellevanille and at @jimhenkens lovely Lummi island property.

Anyway; this photo reminds me of this journey. If you are in Cyprus, I hope you have had a chance to read the article, I will share it when it comes online this week.
